It was a long wait but the day finally came when our brand new custom built Peterbilt arrived. To say I was excited is a huge understatement. Frankly, my guts were churning and I felt a bit sick! I mean, there I was, a 28 year old with no business experience and who was quickly feeling way out of my element, wondering if this was more than I could handle.
It came “piggy-backed” on the back of another new truck and had to be unloaded at the Peterbilt Pacific dealership and do their pre-delivery inspection. While they were doing that, I was in the salesman’s office, handing him a cheque for the balance owed. Anne was paying the whole balance on it and it was the largest cheque I had ever had in my hands. Their finance department was a little disappointed that they weren’t needed. But soon enough the deal was done, the truck was ready and they handed me the keys.
I went outside to see the new toy and felt like I was living in a dream. There it was. A brand new Pete, with an automatic transmission, destined to become a motorhome.
After getting a permit I drove it to the RV builders shop and they got to work right away. Since it was going to be longer than the Kenworth they had to add a short extension to their shop.
And two days later I was back on the road trucking, like it never even happened.
